Cottage Accommodation in Dunster

Chorister Cottage is a pretty, comfortable and cosy 19th Century stone cottage set in the centre of Dunster, one of Exmoor’s most attractive villages.  The medieval village of Dunster is located on the North Coast of Somerset, 22 miles from Taunton.

The cottage is within walking distance of hotels, shops, tea rooms, restaurants and three welcoming pubs that offer excellent cuisine.

Dunster’s famous castle, gardens and Watermill are only five minutes walk away.  The cottage itself backs onto historic St. George’s Church, with rood screen, active congregation and Bells.  Dunster’s Village Garden and Tithe Barn are just around the corner.

There is free on road parking.  The cottage is warm and well decorated.  It has two bedrooms, one double bedroom and one single room.  The single bed can be made into a double if required.  The lounge has a double sofa bed.
We will supply everything you need to help make your stay as stress free as possible.
A dishwasher, iron, television, DVD Player, radios, hairdryer and curling brush, various soaps, shampoo, toiletries and dressing gowns will be standard.
Should you feel energetic; two portable bikes will be provided.

We can also supply a pre visit shopping service (our supermarkets are Tesco, Co-op and Spar) and as there is no washing machine, a wash and dry only service will be offered.
There is free Wi-Fi and a small library of books magazines, CDs and DVDs.

Although Chorister Cottage has no garden, a beautiful communal garden for sitting in only, is just three doors away down the lane.

Dunster

Dunster with its wealth of interesting shops and restaurants lies about a picturesque main street and is overlooked at one end by Dunster Castle (National Trust) and at the other by a folly tower, built in 1760, at the top of Conyger Hill. The circular, embattled tower is the beacon for Dunster for miles around.

Dunster Castle, once the home of the Luttrell family, is approached through a gateway, which is the oldest part of the castle and dates from the 13th century. The castle stands in fine grounds and boasts a working watermill built on a site of a mill mentioned in the Doomsday Survey of 1086, the present mill dates from the 18th century and was restored to working order in 1979.

Other important places to see in Dunster are Gallox Bridge, a medieval packhorse bridge, the Luttrell Arms, once the residence of the Abbots of Cleeve, the Yarn Market, an octagonal market cross built by George Luttrell in 1589, the Nunnery in Church Street partly built in the 14th century and Bat’s Castle an iron age camp found in the Deer Park behind Dunster Castle.

Exmoor National Park is one of the loveliest areas of countryside in the British Isles and well worth exploring either by bicycle, car, or the favoured way of walking. Its rolling moor is wealth of colour, particularly when the heather is in bloom, an ideal place to sketch and paint. Streams, rocks, boulders, bogs and woodlands remain unspoilt due to its relative inaccessibility.

Buzzards, kestrels and sparrow hawks are just some of the birdlife available to see for birdwatchers. Look out for Exmoor’s famous, but shy ponies with their characteristic eyes, they have roamed Exmoor for thousands of years. Red deer have also lived on Exmoor since prehistoric times, early morning ramblers or evening walkers are moor likely to catch a glimpse of them.

There are numerous walks on Exmoor and in the hills and countryside around Dunster. The South West Coast Path passes Dunster and a newly formed 36 mile walk, inspired by the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772 – 1834), runs from Nether Stowey, Coleridges home in the Quantock Hills, to Porlock on the West Somerset Coast, passing the isolated farmhouse where he wrote Kubla Khan.

The nearest town is Minehead, less than two miles away, has its own hospital and minor injuries unit. On visiting Minehead, the first impression is of a lively town geared towards the tourist trade, however it also has whole areas reminiscent of a village, thatched cottages and a picturesque harbour and of course it adjoins the 265 miles of unspoilt Exmoor.

Activities

The beautiful countryside around Dunster and on to Exmoor and the coast is best appreciated on foot. Numerous walks can accommodate the most adventurous or more sedate rambler.

Fly fishing on Exmoor for Wild Brown Trout, Grayling and Salmon is available by the day on the River Exe, Barle (a tributary of the Exe) and Lyn. Local expertise offers tuition for the beginner or more advanced. Wimbleball Lake offers Rainbow Trout fishing and sailing. Minehead was originally a fishing village, now fishing trips can be booked from its harbour.

The West Somerset Steam Railway is a wonderful day out. The historic railway starts in Minehead and stops at Dunster, Blue Anchor, Watchet, Washford, Williton and Bishops Lydeard. There are many riding centres in and around Exmoor if horse riding takes your fancy.

Somerset has a thriving art base that emcompasses something for everyone. There are local artists, ceramicists, sculptors and makers of fine stained glass.
